Hello,

I am doing a very brief market research survey and I am looking for stay-at-home mothers who are thinking about starting their own business, or who are in the very early stages of starting their own business. The survey will take 5-10 minutes and the results will be kept anonymous and confidential.

If you are a stay-at-home mother who is considering starting a business, and would be willing to spend 5-10 answering this online survey, please email me at samsurvey@metaoracle.com. I will not share or sell your email, or contact you with any advertisements.

Thank you for your time!
Annalee Newitz is a writer who covers the collisions between technology and media, culture and science. She is a contributing editor at Wired, and writes the nationally-syndicated column Techsploitation. You can also find her writing in Popular Science, New Scientist, and The Believer. She is the author of Pretend We're Dead, a political analysis of monster movies, and Vice President of Computer Professionals for Social Responsibility.

Charlie Anders is the author of Choir Boy (Soft Skull Press 2005) which won a Lambda Literary Award.

The folks over at One Brick http://www.onebrick.org need volunteers to tackle their long list of web development and design updates. Volunteers with ASP/SQL skills are needed for more advanced back-end development of the database and events management system.
(I copied and pasted that and have no idea what it means)
People interested in volunteering should send and email to design@onebrick.org

are there any women in here other than myself in the wildlife research field? I realize that we are a rare species, but I would so like to felowship with more than my female professors! In this male-dominated, good-old-boy field, I need some strong, motivated women to model myself after. HELP!

Hey all Bay Area peeps--I'm the current Chair for the Programs committee of the San Francisco chapter for the Association of Women in Science. We have a very active chapter that is an amazing way to network with other scientists. I've been an active member for about a year, and I can't say enough great things about it.

Our next event is Feb. 25th and it's the winter workshop, which is held on a Saturday. It will be a workshop on job skills (among other things). Contact me if you want more information, or check out

We should have information up soon.

Cheers!

Women in Tech website looking for help

Are you passionate about technology? Interested in seeing more women in leadership roles in the industry?

I am the content editor, primary webmaster, tech support department, and member services department for WITI. WITI (Women in Technology International -- www.witi.com) is dedicated to helping tech-savvy women attain their professional goals through connections, resources, & opportunities within a supportive environment of women committed to helping each other. WITI's mission is to empower women worldwide to achieve unimagined possibilities and transformations through technology, leadership and economic prosperity.

WITI is in need of an extra pair of hands. We are (I am) in need of someone (possibly several someones) who can handle tech support and membership emails, foster community on our discussions boards, and handle light graphics work. Most of this work is detail-oriented and directly affects how people perceive WITI.

We're also looking for someone (could be the same person) who can handle routine website updates. This person MUST be able/willing to code HTML by hand. Use of a WYSIWYG HTML editor like GoLive, FrontPage, or DreamWeaver is incompatible with the site structure. Familiarity with HTML required, familiarity with CSS highly preferred. Some familiarity with W3C standards of code/design preferred. Be comfortable with graphics work, preferably Photoshop fluent. Illustrator and ImageReady a bonus. In most cases, this person would be inserting new content into existing structure.

WITI wants to see more women at the top levels of technology and other companies and believes that through support and networking this is an attainable goal. If you might be interested in helping make that happen, and you are comfortable working remotely, being proactive, and learning as you go, please email cgilman@corp.witi.com to start a conversation.

Hi everyone

I'm looking for some advice, the company I work for wants to hire an engineer. Of course we will choose the best engineer for the position, but all other things being equal we would like to hire a female. Women are underrepresented on our technical teams, sorry to say this isn't that unusual! But we are working to improve the situation, and want to encourage female applicants.

Can anyone point me toward some effective sites on which to post the job, in order to inform qualified engineers and women in particular about the opportunity?
Thanks!
Happy discoveries,

different rights of passages into the field

I am a Linux user and I belong to a couple of Linux user groups that are nearly all men. A couple of the guy’s girlfriends come to the meetings because they would never see them otherwise. These groups were interesting but I was intimidated. I learned what RTFM (read the fucking manual) means and there were a lot of “That’s a stupid question” responses to beginner questions. I discovered Linuxchix.org through geek girls tribe and I discovered a whole new Linux culture. RTFM is verboten and considered rude. They have a motto that no question is a stupid question. There seems to be a culture of helping the newest person to learn so that they may in turn help the next generation.
My question is this do you think that one of the major problems is that men and women have different rights of passages into the field?
For instance in my situation it seems the men have a sink or swim mentality. If you swim you can be one of the guys who get to tell the newest user to RTFM. With my particular women’s group it is the opposite you are a good Linux guru if you help the newest user to become an advanced user.
My next question is how can we bridge that gap?

*** Third Orbit Thursday -- June 16th, 2005 in San Francisco, CA ***

Hi there,

Care to meet in person, over drinks, to discuss how people might sustainably provide something to look forward to for the world's populations by travelling into space and really beginning the era of space colonization? How might development in sustainable technology be influenced by the stresses of existence in space? Are there particular areas that might constitute "low-hanging fruit" for companies wishing to bypass government slowness by making the first space colonies a private endeavour? Or is public-private partnership the answer? Or does capitalism belong on Earth, not in space? How about nuclear (fission or fusion? vs. solar (photovoltaic or catching the solar wind)? What do you think?

Come on down to Sublounge this Thursday, June 16th, 2005 (tommorrow night as I write this) to discuss these topics and more!

WHERE:
Sublounge is a funky little pad at 628 20th St. @ 3rd St., in San Francisco between Potrero Hill and the bay.

WHAT:
Third Orbit Thursday is a free event held on, you guessed it, the third Thursday of every month. It's an opportunity to bring together people interested in space travel, sustainable development, alternative communities and burning man to have a social hour over cocktails. Musical hosts will provide good tunes to mellow out to, and there will be bartending staff at your service.

WHEN: ~9:30ish to sometime after midnight, after y'all take off. :-)

SPACECRAFT PARKING: Tons are available nearby. No shortage in this neighborhood.

cheers,
-Garlynn

Questions about careers in science

I’ve been reading over the posts here on this tribe and was so happy to come across it.

I’m trying to make a decision about whether I should go back to school to study biochemistry or neuroscience. I already have a degree from the Pasadena Art Center and am working as a photographer. I enjoy what I do, but if I feel I may find myself more satisfied with a career in science instead of design. Also, I just love to study. When I made the decision to be a photographer, I believed I would just want to finish school as quickly as possible and that wasn’t the case. Now, I would be pleased to begin on another educational/career path that would last many years.

So my questions are, what is like working as a scientist in these or similar fields? Is it rewarding? Do you feel that it’s possible to make a contribution that you can really measure and feel rewarded for? Are some fields better then others to work in? Am I too old for this change? I’m 30 yrs.

I know that there are many factors that play into the financial aspects of working as a scientist, but how can I go about researching this? Where can I find out what the income is for those working in these fields?

I appreciate any help that might be offered.

MPH

Okay, okay, so I'm completely unable to settle in on any particular career goal right now. I've applied to the MSN program at SFSU, but I'm having a hard time maintaining my excitement for nursing. I don't want to take care of people all day and telling people that you're a nurse doesn't necessarily command the kind of respect that I like. But of course, nursing is definitely a huge field with lots of opportunities and flexibility.

If I do get accepted, I'll start in May and have looked at focusing on a public health emphasis. And if I don't get accepted, I may just refocus my energies for next year and try to get into an MPH program.

So here's my question: What kind of job could I try to get into for a year to improve my public health cred and help me get into an MPH program? I am interested in volunteering for a needle exchange program, but I'll have to wait until this semester is over because my plate is pretty full right now.

Thanks for any help!

Thesis or Paper

So I have a question for you that have experience with this. Is it better to do a thesis or paper for your masters? I'm working on an MS in electrical engineering, but my goal is to go on and get a PhD in physics or geophysics. I thought about doing a paper in remote sensing since it doesn't seem like there's any research locally that would be related. However, someone had told me it's better to do a thesis if I plan to continue...

Biotech question--anyone??

Maybe someone here can answer a quick employment related question. I'm exploring moving from academia to a biotech company. My question regards CV/resume format.

I know a standard resume shouldn't exceed about 1-1,5 pages. But I get the feeling positions seeking Research Scientists still want somewhat of a CV type document--meaning longer and including publications.

With publications, there's no way to keep a CV to two pages.

Anyone have any direct experience with this issue? I'd be greatly appreciative.

Merci.

We're going to try to stick to the subjects of Classical and Statistical Thermodynamics and how entropy fits in to the whole structure of things, without getting too far out into whoohoosville. Everyone is welcome.

Career options/suggestions?

I just posted this on "Why S & T" thread, but thought it might fit better in a new thread...

I'm exploring different career options right now. I have a basic liberal arts degree with areas of emphasis in chemistry, psychology and women studies. After having a baby, I decided to go to nursing school and become a nurse-midwife. My son is almost 2 now, and I'm sort of moving away from my super-immersion in the pregnancy/parenthood part of my life. Becoming my own person again, you know.

Anyway, I really enjoyed all the nursing prereqs I took, and now, on the verge of applying to a nursing program, I'm thinking about different science things I could get into instead. I'm kind of overwhelmed! So many cool things to do. The coolest thing I've come across is biological photography, but I understand there's not a huge job market and it takes a while to get your foot in the door.

I definitely want to get in school, do the work and start making some money as soon as I finish, but I don't want to spend 2 years in nursing school only to discover that it's a pain in the ass taking care of people all day. I'm making an appointment next week to talk with a career counselor to see if I can narrow my focus.

Any suggestions?

lego project, brainstorm help?

hey there,

i was wondering if anyone would be able to brainstorm with me on how lego robotics system could be made more attractive to girls- without necc. pandering to fashion obsession or accessorizing, make-up, sexed role play.

BACKGROUND

i'm working on a project for a little course i am on- i have to use the LEGO mindstorms product
http://www.legomindstorms.com/
and build something that interacts with its environment and also can teach another person how to learn something.

i would like to make a model ´thingy, whatever it may be that might encourage curiosity form a girl to get involved making robotics.

i have a nephew aged 12 who was so excited when i showed him the mindstorms product, he couldn't wait to build something. my 11yr old neice looked at the instruction booklet, and the pictures on the outside of the box, and was immediately put-off by it, and not interested at all.

i was thinking if there was a model on the cover that might have incited her curiosty, it might have turned out to be a different introduction to mindstorms.

at LEGO, in the FAQ, they explained why they created
http://www.clikits.com/
"We feel it is important to offer choices for those girls who previously had no experience playing with LEGO brand sets...girls can 'build' picture frames, tote bags, room decorations and even jewelry"
(ex: to make accessories, you buy premade shapes and snap on premade hearts, flowers, etc)

Seems like a lame excuse for 'building'...

GOT ANY IDEAS?

with the mindstorms robotics kit, i was thinking of something that encouraged game playing or role playing, which might be more attractive to girls.

Anyone have any ideas?

In Code

Looks excellent..

In Code by Sarah and David Flannery

In January 1999, Sarah Flannery, a sports-loving teenager from Blarney in County Cork, Ireland, was awarded Ireland's Young Scientist of the Year for her extraordinary research and discoveries in Internet cryptography. The following day, her story began appearing in Irish papers and soon after was splashed across the front page of the London Times, complete with a photo of Sarah and a caption calling her "brilliant." Just sixteen, she was a mathematician with an international reputation.

IN CODE is a heartwarming story that will have readers cheering Sarah on. Originally published in England and cowritten with her mathematician father, David Flannery, IN CODE is "a wonderfully moving story about the thrill of the mathematical chase" (Nature) and "a paean to intellectual adventure" (Times Educational Supplement). A memoir in mathematics, it is all about how a girl next door, nurtured by her family, moved from the simple math puzzles that were the staple of dinnertime conversation to prime numbers, the Sieve of Eratosthenes, Fermat's Little Theorem, googols-and finally into her breathtaking algorithm. Parallel with each step is a modest girl's own self-discovery-her values, her burning curiosity, the joy of persistence, and, above all, her love for her family.

Mileva Einstein and others forgotten

Last week I saw a show on PBS about Einstein’s wife, Mileva. She was a great scientist in her own right but she ended up pregnant with Einstein’s baby out of wedlock. She later married him and babies kept arriving effectively stopping her career.
In at least 12 hand written letters Einstein acknowledged Milevas work when he wrote about “our little theory on the relative motion.”

Both names were sited on the original manuscripts submitted for publication in 1905. They showed a copy of it in the Russian Archives.

The original 1905 manuscript was lost and during WW2 the secretary who typed a new one tried to get him to do an exact copy of the original but he wouldn’t. He re-wrote an “improved” version that didn’t include Mileva.
In 1921 the Nobel prize money went directly to Mileva. He changed the money a few times to cover it up but not well enough.

There is a history of side lining women’s great accomplishments in Science. Do you know of any more interesting stories of women who were never given the credit they deserved? I would love to hear more.
