I just posted this on "Why S & T" thread, but thought it might fit better in a new thread...
I'm exploring different career options right now. I have a basic liberal arts degree with areas of emphasis in chemistry, psychology and women studies. After having a baby, I decided to go to nursing school and become a nurse-midwife. My son is almost 2 now, and I'm sort of moving away from my super-immersion in the pregnancy/parenthood part of my life. Becoming my own person again, you know.
Anyway, I really enjoyed all the nursing prereqs I took, and now, on the verge of applying to a nursing program, I'm thinking about different science things I could get into instead. I'm kind of overwhelmed! So many cool things to do. The coolest thing I've come across is biological photography, but I understand there's not a huge job market and it takes a while to get your foot in the door.
I definitely want to get in school, do the work and start making some money as soon as I finish, but I don't want to spend 2 years in nursing school only to discover that it's a pain in the ass taking care of people all day. I'm making an appointment next week to talk with a career counselor to see if I can narrow my focus.
Any suggestions?

If you are interested in research, check out UCSD's Extension certificate programs. I am sure that there would be something similar up in your area. bioscience.ucsd.edu/BiotechCert.html
They also have a link to career counseling - may give you some new ideas.
Good luck, let us know what you decide to do. -

Re: Career options/suggestions?
Sun, September 5, 2004 - 6:52 PMDo you like animals? Ever consider being a vet tech? You get all the fun of being a nurse, only for animals, and you get to work directly with a vet. There is an ever increasing job market for it, and there are two types now. You can be a Vet Assistant or a Vet Technichian, which is slightly less educated. You can barter for more pay as an Assistant over a Tech, because of schooling. It's always a thought. And it involves biology, chemistry, psychology, and if your vet is cool, you can practice photography on the interesting cases you get in. -

Mon, September 6, 2004 - 10:55 AMGenetic counseling? I don't actually do this so I'm not sure... but I think you get to work with people (but not take care of them) and you're in the health field. I think you can do a certificate program and this and you'll be counseling potential new parents which fits in the with history of interest in pregnancy issues, etc. -

Tue, September 7, 2004 - 12:25 PMGenetic counseling is wonderful. I had to flip a coin to choose genetics or geology (literally I did that). I think my next career would be Genetic counseling its facinating.

Re: Career options/suggestions?
Wed, September 29, 2004 - 2:48 PMWhat did your career counselor say? You say you already have a degree. Use your alumnae status to tap into the alumni network in your area. Seek out others in the field who do things you may be interested in and learn what their lives are like. Be sure to ask what they like and don't like about their work and whatever it took to get there.
